A Bridal Couple, c. 1470. Creator: Unknown
A Bridal Couple, c. 1470. This beautiful painting depicts two lovers of aristocratic rank enjoying a chaste embrace. The painting includes abundant symbolism in the flowers and colours. Their rings and the circlets crowning their heads indicate that they are newlyweds; the blossoming bower surrounding them promises their unions fertility. The young man presents a flower to his bride thought to be forget-me-not, a symbol of remembrance. The brightly coloured costumes of both the man and woman are an indication of wealth and the latest fashion. The colours of both costumes visually suggest that the couple belongs to each other. The colours of green, red, and brown respectively suggest chastity, love, and modesty. Though represented at the peak of their youth and health, this panel was once joined to another called the Rotting Pair (Strasbourg, Musee de l Oeuvre Notre-Dame), in which the young couple transforms into a pair of hideous corpses. Together the ensemble constituted a memento mori, a macabre reminder of the vanity of all things in the face of death

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Bridal Couple, c. 1470" showcases an exquisite painting of two aristocratic lovers engaged in a tender embrace. The unknown artist skillfully weaves symbolism throughout the artwork, particularly evident in the vibrant flowers and colors adorning the scene. Adorned with rings and circlets on their heads, it becomes apparent that this couple is newlywed, while the blossoming bower enveloping them symbolizes their promising fertility. In a gesture of affection, the young man presents his bride with a forget-me-not flower—a poignant symbol of remembrance. Both individuals are attired in brightly colored costumes that not only reflect their wealth but also align them visually as belonging to one another. The hues of green, red, and brown respectively represent chastity, love, and modesty. Although depicted at the pinnacle of youth and vitality, this panel was once connected to another piece called "The Rotting Pair" housed at Strasbourg's Musee de l'Oeuvre Notre-Dame. In this companion artwork, the beautiful couple transforms into ghastly corpses—an unsettling reminder of mortality known as memento mori. Together these pieces serve as a macabre reflection on life's transience and vanity when confronted by death. This remarkable print captures not only the artistic brilliance behind "A Bridal Couple" but also offers insight into its historical context through Heritage Art/Heritage Images' preservation efforts.
