The scene, sketched by C.R. for the Illustrated London News, depicts Broad-Street at the crossing of the Pennsylvania and Reading railroad lines. The intersection was a hive of activity, with horses and carriages sharing the road with trains and their passengers. Three or four men, stationed at the crossing, wave signal flags to prevent accidents. However, the presence of horses adds an element of danger. Horses were known to take fright at the sight and sound of trains, posing a risk to both the animals and nervous foot passengers.
