Bronze Alto-Rilievo, by Woodington, for the Nelson Monument, Trafalgar-Square... 1850. Creator: Unknown
Bronze Alto-Rilievo, by Woodington, for the Nelson Monument, Trafalgar-Square - the Battle of the Nile, 1850. The second alto-relievo has just been placed upon the Nelson Column, and occupies the side of the pedestal facing the National Gallery. It has been designed and cast in bronze by Mr. Woodington, and represents a scene commemorative of the Battle of the Nile. The point of time chosen is when Nelson, having received a severe wound on the head, is carried into the cock-pit...The great effusion of blood occasioned an apprehension that the wound was mortal...the surgeon...quitted the poor fellow then under his hands, that he might instantly attend the Admiral. No! said Nelson, I will take my turn with my brave fellows'. Nor would he suffer his own wound to be examined till every man who had been previously wounded was properly attended to". From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print showcases the second alto-relievo, titled "Bronze Alto-Rilievo, by Woodington," installed on the Nelson Monument in Trafalgar Square, London, in 1850. Designed and cast in bronze by the renowned British sculptor, Thomas Woodington, this masterpiece graces the side of the pedestal facing the National Gallery. The scene depicted in the alto-relievo commemorates the Battle of the Nile, a pivotal moment in British naval history. The chosen point in time is when Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, having received a severe head wound during the battle, is carried into the cock-pit of the HMS Victory. The great effusion of blood led to an apprehension that Nelson's wound was mortal, prompting the surgeon to leave his side to attend to other wounded sailors. However, Nelson's unwavering courage and dedication to his men shone through. He refused to allow his own wound to be examined until every man who had been previously wounded was properly attended to. This inspiring story of courage and selflessness is beautifully captured in Woodington's intricate bronze work, which highlights the heroism and bravery of one of Britain's most celebrated naval figures. The alto-relievo stands as a testament to Nelson's indomitable spirit and the enduring legacy of the Battle of the Nile.
