Bronze lamp, c1500-1550, (1881). Etching of an oil lamp made in the workshop of Severo da Ravenna, in Padua or Ravenna in Italy, in the first half of the 16th century. The oil was contained in the satyrs head, whose mouth forms the burner; a hinged cover to the oil hole is on the crown. The stand is in the form of an eagles claw. From " The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). [Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington, London, 1881]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning bronze lamp from the 16th century. Created by Severo Calzetta da Ravenna, in collaboration with J Emms, this exquisite oil lamp was crafted in either Padua or Ravenna, Italy. The lamp's design is truly remarkable - the oil was contained within a satyr's head, cleverly utilizing its mouth as the burner. A hinged cover on top of the crown allowed for easy access to refill the oil. The stand of this magnificent piece takes on the form of an eagle's claw, adding an element of mythological symbolism to its overall aesthetic. This photograph comes from "The South Kensington Museum" a book that features engraved illustrations and detailed descriptions of artworks housed at what is now known as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Severo Calzetta da Ravenna's mastery shines through in every intricate detail captured by this etching. The combination of Renaissance craftsmanship and Italian artistry makes this lamp an exceptional artifact that represents both historical significance and artistic brilliance. As you gaze upon this image, you can't help but be transported back in time to an era where such ornamental pieces were highly treasured. It serves as a reminder of how art transcends time and continues to captivate us centuries later.
