EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 11th-to-early 12th-century sculpture depicts the Buddhist deity Hevajra, a central figure in the esoteric Tibetan Buddhism tradition. Hevajra is shown here in his wrathful aspect, with four faces and twelve arms, each hand forming a distinct mudra or symbolic gesture. The deity wears a crown adorned with five heads and a necklace of fifty-one skulls, symbolizing the subjugation of the five senses and the fifty-one mental afflictions. The copper alloy statue, with traces of gilding, was likely produced in Tibet or Nepal. Hevajra's fierce expression and dynamic posture convey a sense of power and energy, reflecting the deity's role as a protector and transformative force. The statue's intricate details and vibrant colors, which have been preserved remarkably well over the centuries, attest to the exceptional craftsmanship of the artist. Hevajra is often depicted in union with his consort, Nairatmya, symbolizing the unity of male and female energies in the universe. In Tibetan Buddhism, Hevajra is believed to grant the practitioner the ability to transcend dualities and attain enlightenment. This rare and captivating sculpture is now part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's collection, where it continues to inspire awe and reverence among visitors from around the world. The statue's rich history and intricate details offer a glimpse into the complex and profound world of Tibetan Buddhism, a tradition that continues to shape the spiritual lives of millions of people today.
