EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 17th century sculpture depicts Vajravarahi, the fierce and compassionate Buddhist goddess of Tibetan Buddhism. The statue, made of copper alloy, stands at approximately 11 inches tall and is adorned with intricate details and vibrant colors. Vajravarahi is shown in a dynamic posture, with one leg folded and the other extended, and her right hand in the mudra of granting boons, while her left hand holds a skull cup, symbolizing the offering of her own essence for the enlightenment of all beings. The goddess's fierce appearance is accentuated by her multiple arms, each holding various symbols of power and protection. Her third eye is open, signifying her all-seeing wisdom, and her long, flowing hair is adorned with various ornaments and jewels. Her body is adorned with a tiger skin, symbolizing her fearlessness and power, and she is surrounded by various symbols of the five Buddha families and the eight great mother goddesses. The exact origin of this sculpture is unknown, but it is believed to have been created in Tibet during the 17th century. It is now part of the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of South Asian art and the enduring influence of Tibetan Buddhism. The statue is a reminder of the deep spiritual traditions and artistic achievements of the past, and serves as an inspiration for contemporary audiences to explore the depths of their own inner wisdom and compassion.
