The Building in Hyde Park, for the Great Exhibition of 1851 - Drilling Machine, 1850. Creator: Unknown
The Building in Hyde Park, for the Great Exhibition of 1851 - Drilling Machine, 1850. One of Nathan Gough's four-horse vertical high-pressure engines is used for giving motion to the drilling and punching machines, which are placed one on either side at convenient distances. We have introduced a view of each of these machines. On the horizontal shaft of the engine, which passes through the top of the boiler, are three pullies of various diameters, from which two gutta percha and one leathern band pass to the two machines already mentioned. The Drilling Machine, which is one of Nasmyth's construction, is shown in the operation of perforating iron bars for the rivets. Two of the men are attending to place the bar under the drill; and a third is pouring oil into the drill-hole, to keep the drill cool'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print transports us back to the historic Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park, London, where The Building showcases a drilling machine powered by one of Nathan Gough's four-horse vertical high-pressure engines. The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the innovative construction site of the event. The engine, located at the center, is depicted with its three pulleys on the horizontal shaft, from which gutta percha and leather bands transmit power to the drilling and punching machines on either side. In this image, we focus on the drilling machine, a Nasmyth construction, in action as it perforates iron bars for rivets. Two workers are seen attending to the bar under the drill, while a third pours oil into the drill-hole to keep it cool. The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations, organized by Sir Joseph Paxton, brought together various industries and showcased the latest advancements in technology. This photograph provides a fascinating insight into the role of steam power and machinery in the construction industry during the 19th century. The image, though unattributed, is a testament to the groundbreaking progress made during this era, with James Nasmyth's drilling machine being one of the many marvels on display. The men in the photograph embody the spirit of innovation and hard work that characterized the construction site during this period.
