Building of the Panama Canal, Panama, late 19th-early 20th century
Building of the Panama Canal, Panama, late 19th-early 20th century. The idea of building a canal between the Atlantic and Pacific was first planned by the French civil engineer and builder of the Suez Canal, Ferdinand de Lesseps. The French began work in 1880, but 9 years later the difficulties posed by the terrain, disease and spiralling costs doomed the project to failure. The United States bought the land in 1904 for $40 million, and proceeded to complete the 80 kilometre long canal between 1904 and 1914. The building of the canal cost the lives of an estimated 25, 000 workers due to accidents and tropical diseases

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the monumental undertaking of building the Panama Canal in the late 19th and early 20th century. The ambitious idea of connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans was initially conceived by Ferdinand de Lesseps, a French civil engineer renowned for his work on the Suez Canal. However, after nine years of grappling with treacherous terrain, rampant disease, and escalating costs, the French project ultimately met its demise. Undeterred by these setbacks, the United States stepped in and acquired the land in 1904 for a staggering $40 million. Over a decade-long period from 1904 to 1914, American engineers successfully completed this engineering marvel spanning an impressive 80 kilometers. The construction of this historic waterway came at a great human cost as approximately 25,000 workers lost their lives due to accidents and tropical diseases prevalent in this region. Despite these tragedies, their dedication and sacrifice paved the way for enhanced global commerce and trade routes. In this vibrant print filled with vivid colors depicting bustling activity along riverside hillsides and islands, we witness various elements crucial to constructing such an immense feat: dredgers diligently digging through earthy landscapes while boats navigate through newly created waterways. This image serves as both a testament to human ingenuity in overcoming seemingly insurmountable challenges and as a reminder of those who paid the ultimate price for progress. It stands as an enduring symbol of civil engineering excellence that forever altered transportation networks across continents.
