Bunyarrambite Waterfalls, near Melbourne, 1858. These falls are 300 feet in height, and are situated on the Yarram creek of the River Goulburn, rather more than eighty miles from Melbourne, on the station of John Aitkin, Esq. This creek, after following seven or eight miles, joins the Goulburn River. Mr. Ramsay, in his recent visit, says of this river, "The banks were lined with fern-trees, musk-plants, mimosas, lemon-plants, and others too numerous to mention, but whose blossom and flower diffused the finest fragrance. The wild vine crept from tree to tree, and hung the branches with fair festoons, while wild raspberries, with abundance of delicious fruit, proved useful as well as ornamental in our journey." As he nears the falls Mr. Ramsay tells us, "the body of water dashed over ledges of granite, and fell from crag to crag with thundering sound till it reached the depth below: high mountains rose from side to side, frowning over the scene." As he ascends towards the summit of the falls the vegetation gets even more luxuriant, fern-tree leaves being not less than seven or eight feet in length; specimens of the lyre-bird are often seen at the spot'. Bunyarrambite Waterfalls, captured in this stunning 1858 photograph, are located near Melbourne, Australia, on the Yarram creek of the River Goulburn. The falls, which measure an impressive 300 feet in height, can be found on the property of John Aitkin, Esquire, approximately 80 miles from Melbourne. The creek, after winding through seven or eight miles, eventually merges with the River Goulburn. In his account of the region, traveler Mr. Ramsay described the area as a lush, fragrant paradise. He noted the banks of the creek were adorned with fern-trees, musk-plants, mimosas, and various other flora whose blossoms and flowers emitted the most delightful fragrance. As he approached the falls, Mr. Ramsay was captivated by the sight and sound of the water cascading over ledges of granite, creating a thundering sound as it reached the depth below. Surrounded by towering mountains, the scene was a breathtaking display of natural beauty. As Mr. Ramsay ascended towards the summit of the falls, he was further enchanted by the luxuriant vegetation. Fern-tree leaves, measuring not less than seven or eight feet in length, dominated the landscape. The elusive lyre-bird, a native Australian bird, was often spotted in the area. This photograph, taken over 160 years ago, offers a glimpse into the rich history and natural wonders of Victoria, Australia.
