EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1858, showcases the stunning Caen College in Caen Basse, Normandy, France. The image features the Church of St. Stephen, where the remains of William the Conqueror, also known as William I or William of Normandy, lie in the chancel of his church. The Church of St. Stephen, which was once an abbey, now houses the College or Lyceum of Caen. Caen has long been referred to as the 'Oxford of France' due to its rich history as a seat of learning. The university, now represented by a lyceum, an academy, and five other scientific establishments, owes its origin to Henry VI, the founder of Eton College in England. The principal lyceum, the finest in France, is suggested by the fact that it accommodates over two hundred interne students, each with a bedroom to himself. The architectural beauty of the college and its abbey, as depicted in this photograph, is a testament to the artistic and cultural significance of this historic institution. The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1858, provides a glimpse into the past, showcasing the exterior of the College and the Church of St. Stephen. The black and white engraving, which captures the essence of the scene, transports us back in time and offers a unique perspective on the history and beauty of Caen.
