EDITORS COMMENTS
Canto III: The Battle of Mount Ararat, a captivating etching from the 16th century by the renowned Italian artist Antonio Tempesta. This masterpiece is part of the Jerusalem Delivered II series, inspired by Torquato Tasso's epic poem "Gerusalemme Liberata." The scene depicts the fierce clash between Christian crusaders and Saracen forces during the First Crusade. Tempesta's intricate and detailed illustration showcases a chaotic battlefield filled with armed forces on horseback and on foot, their faces etched with determination and resolve. The cavalrymen charge forward, their horses rearing and snorting, while infantrymen engage in hand-to-hand combat. Mythical and mythological creatures, such as griffins and dragons, add an element of the fantastical to the scene. The lettering at the bottom of the print reads "Canto III," indicating that this is a depiction of the third canticle from Tasso's poem. The black and white, or bw, image is a testament to the Baroque era's artistic style, with its dramatic contrasts and intricate details. This historic artwork, a cultural heritage from Europe, is now on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), inviting visitors to explore the rich history of the First Crusade and the literary and artistic traditions of the 16th century.
