The Caporali Missal, 1469. Creator: Bartolommeo Caporali (Italian, c. 1420-1503)

The Caporali Missal, 1469. Called a missal, this manuscript served as a liturgical service book used by the priest at the altar during Mass. According to a colophon, an inscription on folio 400, the missal was made for the Franciscan church of San Francesco in Montone, near Perugia in the region of Umbria, in 1469. It was illuminated by Bartolomeo and Giapeco Caporali, two artist brothers who collaborated on the page decorations. The missal is opened here to the volumes masterpiece, a two-page deluxe opening to the Canon of the Mass with a Calvary scene. The Canon introduces the most solemn part of the Mass during which the priest elevates and consecrates the Eucharistic bread and wine. Saint Francis kneels at the foot of the cross, attesting to the missals Franciscan use and affiliation

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Caporali Missal" a remarkable manuscript created by Bartolommeo Caporali in 1469. The missal, known as a liturgical service book used during Mass, was specifically made for the Franciscan church of San Francesco in Montone, near Perugia. Illuminated by two talented artist brothers, Bartolomeo and Giapeco Caporali, this masterpiece is opened to its most splendid section – a two-page deluxe opening to the Canon of the Mass featuring a breathtaking Calvary scene. At the center of this magnificent artwork stands Saint Francis himself, kneeling humbly at the foot of the cross. This depiction not only adds an element of religious significance but also emphasizes the missal's connection to Franciscan use and affiliation. The Canon portrayed here introduces one of the most solemn moments during Mass when the priest consecrates and elevates the Eucharistic bread and wine. Crafted with meticulous detail using ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, this bound volume spans an impressive 400 folios. Its historical value lies not only in its artistic beauty but also in its representation of Italian culture from that era. Now preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection, this print allows us to appreciate and admire every intricate brushstroke executed by these skilled artists over five centuries ago. It serves as a testament to their talent while offering us insight into religious practices during that time period.
