EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, hailing from the 19th century, showcases the departure of Captain Horatio Thomas Austin's Expedition, sent in search of the lost Sir John Franklin. The photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, depicts four ships setting sail from the River Thames Estuary in Greenhithe, Kent, England. The vessels, named 'The Resolute' (Captain H.T. Austin), 'The Assistance' (Captain Erasmus Ommanney), 'The Pioneer' (Lieutenant-Commander Sherard Osborn), and 'The Intrepid' (Lieutenant-Commander John Bettie Cator), were meticulously outfitted for the Arctic expedition, equipped with a multitude of scientific aids and appliances. The Gutta Percha Company had manufactured eight light gutta percha sledges or boats, each weighing 201 pounds. When turned upside down, these sledges served as shelters for the men during the night. In addition, each ship received copies of a practical Esquimaux language vocabulary, compiled by Captain Washington, R.N., to facilitate communication during land expeditions and over the ice. The ships, a mix of sailing and steam vessels, were prepared for a challenging journey, as they ventured into the polar regions in search of Sir John Franklin, who had gone missing during his own Arctic expedition. The image captures the determination and resolve of the sailors as they set sail on their noble quest, leaving the familiar shores of England behind. This evocative print, a testament to the spirit of exploration and the advancements in technology during the Victorian era, remains an intriguing piece of maritime history.
