EDITORS COMMENTS
Caractacus, 1902. Artist: Patten Wilson In this print, we are transported back to ancient Britain during the Roman invasion. The central figure is Caractacus, the valiant King of the British tribe of Trinovantes and son of Cunobelinus. Standing tall in his regal attire, he exudes strength and determination. Caratacus' kingdom stretched across Hampshire and Gloucestershire, encompassing various tribes united under his rule. When Aulus Plautius led the Roman forces into Britain during Claudius' reign, Caractacus fearlessly resisted their advance. Though ultimately defeated, he refused to surrender entirely. The artist Patten Wilson masterfully captures Caractacus as a warrior king ready for battle. Clad in armor adorned with intricate Celtic designs and wearing a majestic helmet, he holds a shield symbolizing his unwavering defiance against foreign invaders. This monochrome engraving beautifully conveys both the historical significance of Caractacus' resistance and its literary inspiration from Charles Dickens' 'A Child's History of England. ' Through Wilson's artistry, we witness an iconic moment from British history brought to life. As we gaze upon this print today, it serves as a reminder of our ancestors' resilience in defending their homeland against all odds. Caractacus stands as a symbol not only of bravery but also as an embodiment of national pride that continues to resonate through time.
