Carlisle Castle, Cumbria, 1894. Creator: Unknown

Carlisle Castle, Cumbria, 1894. Dating from 1093, the castle was built to keep the northern border of England secured against the threat of invasion from Scotland. Henry VIII converted the castle for artillery, employing the engineer Stefan von Haschenperg. It was besieged by the Parliamentary forces for eight months in 1644, during the English Civil War, served as the prison of Mary Queen of Scots, and played a part in the Jacobite uprising against King George II in 1745. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1894, showcasing the magnificent Carlisle Castle in Cumbria, England. With its origins dating all the way back to 1093, this historic fortress was constructed as a stronghold against potential Scottish invasions. Throughout its long history, Carlisle Castle has witnessed numerous significant events that have shaped British heritage. During Henry VIII's reign, the castle underwent renovations to accommodate artillery under the supervision of engineer Stefan von Haschenperg. In 1644, it endured an arduous eight-month siege by Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War. The castle also served as a prison for Mary Queen of Scots and played a role in the Jacobite uprising against King George II in 1745. The photo captures not only the architectural grandeur of this medieval fortification but also highlights its picturesque surroundings. This image is part of "Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes" published by The Werner Company of Chicago in 1894.
