The Castle of Falaise and Fountain of Arlette, 1890
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the enchanting world of medieval France. The image showcases the majestic Chateau de Falaise, a magnificent fortress that once served as the seat of power for the Dukes of Normandy. Restored with great care between 1870 and 1874 after being deserted for centuries, this architectural marvel stands proudly against the backdrop of Basse-Normandie. But it is not just the castle that captures our attention in this photograph; it is also Arlette's Fountain, which holds a tale as old as time itself. Legend has it that here, at this very spot marked by the fountain, Robert the Magnificent fell deeply in love with Arlette. Their love story transcended social boundaries when he took her as his wife. The image transports us to an era long gone but forever etched in history books. It evokes a sense of wonder about life during those times - fortifications protecting kingdoms, literature flourishing amidst grand landscapes, and noble ladies like Arlette leaving their mark on society. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from "Cassells Illustrated Universal History" we are reminded that even though centuries have passed since these events unfolded, their significance still resonates today. This print serves as a window into both architectural beauty and timeless tales of love and devotion.
