Cavalry of the French Imperial Guard, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Cavalry of the French Imperial Guard, 1854....a new era has at length commenced, and the Imperial Guard of France once more starts into being...[illustrated here in] costume selected by Napoleon III...The entire force comprises a division, and musters about 10, 000 men. These troops are, of course, picked, being chosen on account of their soldier-like bearing and martial carriage; and consequently present, either individually or when in the ranks, an imposing appearance. Their arms and appointments are unexceptionable, and a finer body of troops could not be paraded. They are generally quartered in Paris, unless urgent necessity demands their services elsewhere'. This photograph print, created in the mid-19th century, showcases the Cavalry of the French Imperial Guard in 1854. The caption from the "Illustrated London News" reads, "a new era has at length commenced, and the Imperial Guard of France once more starts into being...The entire force comprises a division, and musters about 10, 000 men." Dressed in the costume selected by Napoleon III, these troops present an imposing sight, both individually and when in formation. The cavalrymen are handpicked for their soldier-like bearing and martial carriage, making them an exceptional body of troops. Their arms and appointments are of the finest quality, and the horses they ride are equally impressive. The cavalry is generally quartered in Paris, but can be deployed elsewhere when necessary. The men are seen here wearing full uniform, complete with breastplates, chest plates, coats, jackets, hats, and boots. The cavalrymen ride horses adorned with saddles, bridles, and lances, adding to their regal appearance. This photograph is a testament to the grandeur and majesty of the French Imperial Guard during this era. The image, which is a engraving, is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the fashion, military uniforms, and the daily life of the soldiers during the 19th century.
