The Ceremony at St. Paul s, London, 1897. Artist: E&S Woodbury

The Ceremony at St. Paul s, London, 1897. The photograph was taken immediately after the conclusion of the Service, when Her Majesty (whose face is clearly seen) turned to receive the congratulations of the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge. The latter is in the act of addressing the Queen: the Prince is close behind him. The Princess of Wales and Princess Christian are the other occupants of the carriage; the latter holds her fan to screen her face from the sun. The Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr. Temple) stands directly above the Queen. Queen Victoria (1819-1901) celebrated her Diamond Jubilee (60th anniversary of her reign - June 1837-June 1897). Her reign of 63 years and seven months was longer than that of any previous British monarch. Here her carriage is seen outside St Pauls Cathedral. From Sixty Years A Queen: The Story of Her Majestys Reign, by Sir Herbert Maxwell. [Harmsworth Bros, Limited, London, c1897]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Ceremony at St. Paul's, London, 1897 captures a historic moment in British history as Queen Victoria celebrates her Diamond Jubilee. In this remarkable photograph taken by E&S Woodbury, we witness the grandeur and significance of the occasion. Immediately after the conclusion of the Service, Queen Victoria turns to receive congratulations from two prominent figures - the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge. The expressions on their faces reveal their admiration and respect for Her Majesty. The carriage itself is a sight to behold, with its ornate design and regal occupants. Besides the Queen, we see the Princess of Wales and Princess Christian seated inside. Princess Christian shields herself from the sun using her fan while maintaining an air of elegance. Standing directly above Queen Victoria is none other than Dr. Temple, Archbishop of Canterbury. His presence adds a touch of religious solemnity to this joyous event. This photograph not only immortalizes an iconic moment but also serves as a testament to Queen Victoria's extraordinary reign that spanned over six decades - longer than any previous British monarch before her. As we gaze upon this print today, we are transported back in time to witness firsthand one of history's most significant celebrations.
