EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a significant piece of history - the "Certificate of Endowment for the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows" dating back to October 15,1908. The certificate, made out to Edgar Leroy Boyd by the Mutual Endowment Association of the District Grand Lodge of Ohio, holds immense cultural and historical value. The Grand United Order of Odd Fellows was founded in 1843 and has been predominantly comprised of African Americans due to racial discrimination prevalent in the United States at that time. This unique aspect makes this certificate an emblematic representation of black history. The intricate design features red and black print as well as handwritten text on a backdrop that exudes elegance and heritage artistry. An all-seeing allegorical figure adorns the top, symbolizing wisdom and guidance within this friendly society. A foil seal is affixed to the bottom left corner, signifying its authenticity. The juxtaposition between white armor-clad figures and a female figure dressed in regal attire adds depth to this artistic composition. Preserved by the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this photograph captures not only a document but also serves as a testament to resilience against adversity faced by African Americans throughout history. As we reflect upon this image, it reminds us not only of our country's past struggles but also highlights how diverse communities have come together through organizations like these, fostering unity amidst challenging times.
