EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a timeless portrait of Cesar, Duke of Vendome as an infant. Born in 1594, Cesar de Bourbon was the illegitimate son of Henry IV of France and his mistress Gabrielle d'Estrees. Despite his controversial birth, he went on to become a prominent French nobleman and founder of the House of Bourbon-Vendome. The image is based on a drawing from 1596 by Benjamin Foulon, which can be found in the Bibliotheque nationale de France in Paris. It was featured in the "Exposition de Portraits, peints et dessines" exhibition held at the Bibliotheque Nationale from April to June 1907. In this portrait, baby Cesar is depicted with innocence and charm. The artist beautifully captures his delicate features and curious expression as he holds onto a rattle. This portrayal offers us a glimpse into the early life of an influential figure who would go on to hold titles such as 1st Duke of Vendome, 2nd Duke of Beaufort, and 2nd Duke of Etampes. This photograph not only showcases historical significance but also serves as a testament to artistic talent throughout centuries. Its inclusion in the exhibition highlights its importance within art history. As we gaze upon this precious image today, we are reminded that even those born under complex circumstances can leave indelible marks on society through their achievements and contributions.
