EDITORS COMMENTS
(It's a horror! I am a Danish civil servant! -- Complain! We do our best to move you forward) is a satirical lithograph by the renowned French caricaturist Amedee Charles Henri de Noe, better known as Cham. This image was published in the French satirical weekly magazine Le Charivari on Thursday, 16 June 1864, under the series title "Actualites." The print depicts a group of disgruntled Danish civil servants, dressed in traditional Danish attire, gathered around a man in military uniform. The man, who is identified as a Danish functionary, is shown with a look of despair on his face, exclaiming "It's a horror! I am a Danish civil servant! -- Complain! We do our best to move you forward." The other civil servants are seen complaining and holding various objects, such as a broken umbrella and a torn hat, symbolizing their hardships. The caricature is a commentary on the Danish civil service during the 19th century, particularly during a time of political instability and economic hardship. Cham's use of humor and exaggerated figures effectively conveys the frustration and dissatisfaction felt by the civil servants, while also highlighting the absurdity of their situation. The lithograph is an important historical artifact, providing insight into the social and political climate of the time. It is also a testament to Cham's skill as a caricaturist, as he was able to capture the essence of the subject matter with wit and precision. Today, this print is housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and is an essential addition to any collection of 19th-century European art or caricatures.
