Charge of the Chasseurs d'Afrique, October 25, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Charge of the Chasseurs d'Afrique, October 25, 1854. Crimean War, Battle of Balaclava, extract from French commander Canrobert's description: "...my brigade of the Chasseurs d'Afrique, on the left of the English army in the plain, endeavoured to come to its assistance, which it succeeded in doing by a bold and much-remarked manoeuvre, which consisted in attacking on the left a battery of artillery that had been keeping up a murderous fire on the English battalions, and which it drove back. We lost about twenty men killed and wounded, and two officers. The loss of the enemy on this point was considerable"..."One of my friends in this squadron", says our Artist, "had his horse killed in the very square - in the midst of the enemy; but was fortunate enough to catch an artillery horse, which he mounted, and got off safely...".'From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the Charge of the Chasseurs d'Afrique during the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War on October 25, 1854. The exact creator of this photograph remains unknown, but it was published in the Illustrated London News in 1854. The Chasseurs d'Afrique, a French cavalry regiment, are prominently featured in this photograph as they courageously advanced towards the British left flank to aid their English allies. According to French commander Canrobert's account, the Chasseurs d'Afrique, positioned on the left of the English army in the plain, attempted to reach their assistance by attacking a battery of artillery that had been relentlessly firing upon the English battalions. The daring maneuver was successful, and the French cavalry drove back the enemy, resulting in approximately twenty French men being killed or wounded, and two officers sustaining injuries. One of the soldiers in this squadron, as recounted by our artist, experienced a harrowing encounter during the charge. His horse was killed in the heat of battle, but he managed to seize an enemy artillery horse and successfully mounted it, escaping the danger unscathed. This photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the intense and chaotic atmosphere of the Battle of Balaclava, showcasing the bravery and determination of the Chasseurs d'Afrique as they charged towards the enemy lines to support their allies.
