He is probably best recalled for his onscreen romances with Gaynor (1906-1984). For her part, Gaynor was the first winner of the Best Actress Oscar, awarded in 1928 for her performances in Sunrise, Seventh Heaven and Street Angel the latter two starring opposite Farrell
