The Choir of the Cathedral Church of St. Mary, Carlisle, restored, 1857. View of the choir looking east...The most ancient portions of the Cathedral itself are those parts erected in the eleventh and twelfth centuries...The great east window...is of the date of the middle of the fourteenth century...and is one of the finest in the kingdom...The elegant semicircular oak ceiling, which had from 1764 been hidden from view by an ugly ribbed and plaster one, has been brought to light, and appears in its pristine glory, being now richly decorated in gold and colour...the entire fabric is now a magnificent specimen of ecclesiastical Gothic architecture...It is gratifying to learn that the estimate of the cost of alteration has not been exceeded: this sum was about £15, 000. The time occupied in the restoration was about three years, under the able direction of Mr. Christian and Mr. C. H. Purday, his clerk of the works'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by J. & A.W in 1857, showcases the breathtaking interior of The Choir of the Cathedral Church of St. Mary in Carlisle, following its successful restoration. The most ancient parts of the cathedral date back to the eleventh and twelfth centuries, with the magnificent great east window, dating from the middle of the fourteenth century, being one of the finest in the kingdom. For over a century, the elegant semicircular oak ceiling had been obscured by an unattractive ribbed and plaster one. However, during the restoration process, which began in the mid-1850s, this hidden gem was brought back to its original splendor. The ceiling now gleams in all its richly decorated glory, adorned with gold and vibrant colors, adding to the cathedral's status as a magnificent specimen of ecclesiastical Gothic architecture. The restoration project, which was expertly overseen by Mr. Christian and Mr. C.H. Purday, came in under budget with an estimated cost of around £15,000, and took approximately three years to complete. It is heartening to know that the restoration efforts have remained faithful to the original vision, preserving the historical integrity and beauty of this remarkable place of worship.
