The Choral Festival in Peterborough Cathedral, 1862. Creator: Mason Jackson
The Choral Festival in Peterborough Cathedral, 1862. View of...the striking scene presented in the cathedral during the morning service. After singing two verses the choirs, numbering 1200, began to move into the cathedral, and the hymn was repeated by the cathedral choir while the other singers took their seats. The several choirs were seated in the cathedral in the following order, reckoning from east to west: The clergy, first choir, second choir, cathedral choir, third choir, fourth choir, fifth choir, sixth choir, melodists. Each place was marked by a shield of the same colour as the corresponding tickets. The banners of the different choirs were placed in rests against the pillars during the service. The responses were accompanied on the organ, and each chant and each hymn tune was played through before it was sung. A short symphony was played between the giving out and the singing of the anthem ("This is the day which the Lord hath made"), during which the choirs stood up'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "The Choral Festival in Peterborough Cathedral, 1862," by Mason Jackson, offers a glimpse into a remarkable musical event that took place within the hallowed walls of Peterborough Cathedral over a century and a half ago. The image captures the striking scene presented during the morning service of the festival, a time when twelve hundred voices came together in harmonious unison. As the choirs began to enter the cathedral, the congregation repeated the hymn being sung by the cathedral choir. Seated in a specific order from east to west, the choirs took their places: the clergy, first choir, second choir, cathedral choir, third choir, fourth choir, fifth choir, sixth choir, and melodists. Each singer's place was marked by a shield of the same color as their corresponding ticket. The banners of the various choirs were placed against the pillars during the service, and the responses were accompanied by the organ. Before each chant and hymn tune was sung, it was played through on the organ. A short symphony was performed between the giving out and the singing of the anthem ("This is the day which the Lord hath made"), during which the choirs stood in anticipation. This photograph provides a unique window into the past, offering a glimpse into the meticulously organized and beautifully executed Choral Festival of 1862. The image stands as a testament to the power of music and community, bringing together people from all walks of life in a shared celebration of song and faith.
