Painting by...Mr. Warren, the President of the Society...At that time. Jesus went on the Sabbath-day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungered, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the Sabbath-day. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a scene from the Bible, as depicted in the painting 'Christ with the Disciples in the Corn-Field' by Henry Warren. The image, which was exhibited at the New Society of Painters in Water-Colours in London in 1850, shows Jesus and his disciples in a cornfield on the Sabbath day. According to the Gospel of Matthew (xiii. 1-3), Jesus and his disciples were hungry and began to pluck and eat the ears of corn. The Pharisees, who were present, criticized them for working on the Sabbath. In response, Jesus cited the example of King David and his men, who had eaten the consecrated bread in the temple when they were in need. The painting, which was created by Mr. Warren, the President of the Society at the time, is renowned for its felicitous composition and the nice rendering of the landscape. The print, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, captures the full-length figures of Jesus and his disciples in the cornfield. The disciples are shown gesturing towards the corn, while Jesus looks up and points towards the heavens. The print also features palm trees and other plants in the background, adding to the idyllic and pastoral scene. The bearded faces of Jesus and his disciples, set against the backdrop of the wheatfield, convey a sense of tranquility and spirituality. This beautiful and evocative image offers a glimpse into the religious and artistic sensibilities of Victorian Britain.
