EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite work of art, created by the workshop of Paolo Caliari, also known as Veronese, dates back to the 16th century. The recto side of the sheet depicts the Circumcision of the Christ Child, an essential event in the infancy narrative of Jesus as described in the Bible. In this depiction, the infant Jesus lies on a bed while the elderly Saints Joseph and John the Baptist look on as the circumcision is performed by an unseen figure. The atmosphere is calm and serene, with the warm colors and delicate brushstrokes conveying a sense of reverence and awe. On the verso side of the sheet, we find the Marriage of the Virgin, another significant biblical scene. Here, the Virgin Mary is shown seated on a throne, surrounded by various saints and angels, as Joseph places a ring on her finger in a symbolic representation of their union. The black chalk and brown ink drawing, heightened with lead white, is partially discolored on the recto and entirely monochromatic on the verso, adding to the contrast between the two scenes. This magnificent work of art, measuring 23.5 x 17.5 cm, is a testament to the artistic heritage of Italy during the Renaissance period. It is currently housed at the Art Institute of Chicago, where it continues to captivate and inspire visitors from around the world.
