City Hall, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, c1900. Creator: Unknown
City Hall, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, c1900. View of the City Hall and Volunteer Monument. The monument commemorated the men of the 90th Winnipeg Battalion killed in the North West Rebellion of 1885, at the Battle of Fish Creek on 24 April 1885, and the Battle of Batoche on 12 May 1885. The Gingerbread City Hall, designed by brothers Charles A and Earl W Barber, was built between 1883 and 1886. Its mish-mash architectural style caused controversy and it was eventually demolished in 1962. From Scenic Marvels of the New World edited by Prof. Geo.R. Cromwell. [C.N.Greig & Co. c1900]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 1900s, showcasing the magnificent City Hall in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The creator of this stunning image remains unknown, but their talent for capturing architectural beauty is undeniable. The focal point of the photograph is undoubtedly the Gingerbread City Hall, a masterpiece designed by brothers Charles A and Earl W Barber. Built between 1883 and 1886, this iconic structure boasted a mish-mash architectural style that sparked controversy among locals. Sadly, despite its unique charm, it met its demise in 1962 when it was eventually demolished. Adjacent to the City Hall stands the Volunteer Monument - a solemn tribute to fallen heroes from the North West Rebellion of 1885. This monument specifically honors brave men from the 90th Winnipeg Battalion who lost their lives during battles at Fish Creek on April 24th and Batoche on May 12th. As we gaze upon this monochrome landscape frozen in time, we are transported to an era where grandeur met tragedy. The print captures not only an architectural marvel but also serves as a poignant reminder of sacrifice and valor. Credit goes to Professor George R Cromwell for including this remarkable image in his compilation titled "Scenic Marvels of the New World". Thanks to C. N. Greig & Co. , we have been granted access to relive history through this extraordinary piece of artistry.
