Clearing a Jam, Great Falls of the Ausable, 1874. Creator: Harry Fenn
Clearing a Jam, Great Falls of the Ausable, 1874. Loggers trying to shift cut tree trunks in the Ausable Chasm near Keeseville, New York State, USA....the Great Falls, one hundred and fifty feet high, surrounded by the wildest scenery. Below this the stream grows narrower and deeper, and rushes rapidly through the chasm, where, at the narrowest point, a wedged bowlder cramps the channel to the width of five or six feet. From the main stream branches run at right angles through fissures, down one of which, between almost perpendicular rocks a hundred feet high, hangs an equally steep stairway of over two hundred steps.... From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a dramatic scene from the heart of nature's wilderness. Taken in 1874 by Harry Fenn, this image showcases loggers valiantly attempting to shift cut tree trunks in the mesmerizing Ausable Chasm near Keeseville, New York State. The focal point of this photograph is the awe-inspiring Great Falls, standing an impressive one hundred and fifty feet high. Surrounded by untamed scenery, it exudes both power and beauty. Below the falls, the stream narrows and deepens as it rushes through the chasm with incredible speed. At its narrowest point lies a wedged bowlder that restricts its channel to just five or six feet wide. Fascinating details emerge upon closer inspection - branches running at right angles through fissures create a stunning visual spectacle. One particular branch descends between almost perpendicular rocks towering one hundred feet high; here hangs an equally steep stairway consisting of over two hundred steps. This remarkable print is sourced from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant in 1874. It forms part of an extensive collection featuring illustrations on steel and wood by eminent American artists. Step back in time with this extraordinary piece that encapsulates not only natural phenomena but also industrial endeavors within America's rugged landscapes.
