Cleopatra's Needle, Alexandria, 1862. Creator: Unknown

Cleopatra's Needle, Alexandria, 1862. Engraving from a sketch by Captain E. Ostley. Public attention has been directed to the Alexandrian obelisk, popularly known as Cleopatra's Needle, presented to this country by the late Mehemet Ali, in consequence of the suggestion recently made in the Times that it should be brought from Alexandria, where it lies prostrate, and erected in some part of the metropolis as a memorial to the late Prince Consort...The fellow-obelisk to the one shown in our Engraving is still standing...It would seem that both of these obelisks were brought from Heliopolis to Alexandria by one of the Caesars...The obelisks are of red granite, and between 65ft, and 70ft. in height'. Cleopatra's Needle was presented to the United Kingdom in 1819 by the ruler of Egypt and Sudan Muhammad Ali, in commemoration of the victories of Lord Nelson at the Battle of the Nile and Sir Ralph Abercromby at the Battle of Alexandria in 1801. Although the British government welcomed the gesture, it declined to pay to move the obelisk to London. It was subsequently erected on the Victoria Embankment in Westminster, in 1878. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
Cleopatra's Needle, Alexandria, 1862: A Symbol of Ancient Egyptian Legacy and British-Egyptian Diplomacy This engraving, created from a sketch by Captain E. Ostley, captures the majestic allure of Cleopatra's Needle in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1862. The Alexandrian obelisk, a monument of ancient Egyptian history, has long been a subject of fascination for the Western world. In recent times, the suggestion was made in The Times for the obelisk to be brought from Alexandria to the United Kingdom as a memorial to Prince Albert, the late Prince Consort. The Needle, popularly known as Cleopatra's Needle, is one of a pair of obelisks that once stood in Heliopolis, Egypt. The fellow obelisk still remains in Alexandria, while this one, made of red granite, lies prostrate. Both obelisks were believed to have been brought to Alexandria by one of the Caesars. Measuring between 65ft and 70ft in height, the obelisk was presented to the United Kingdom in 1819 by Muhammad Ali, the ruler of Egypt and Sudan, in commemoration of the British victories at the Battle of the Nile and the Battle of Alexandria in 1801. Despite the British government's acceptance of the gift, they declined to pay for the transportation costs. The Needle remained in Alexandria until 1878 when it was finally erected on the Victoria Embankment in Westminster, London, becoming a cherished symbol of the ancient Egyptian legacy and the historical ties between Egypt and the United Kingdom.
