Cliveden House, Buckinghamshire, 1924-1926. Artist: HN King
Cliveden House, Buckinghamshire, 1924-1926. Cliveden is set amid 376 acres of magnificent formal gardens and parklands. Now a luxury hotel and National Trust property, the house was built by Charles Barry for the Duke of Sutherland in 1851. Queen Victoria, a frequent guest, was not amused in 1893 when the house was bought by William Waldorf Astor, Americas richest citizen. When he gave it to his son and daughter-in-law in 1906 Cliveden became the hub of a hectic social whirl where guests included everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Winston Churchill, and President Roosevelt to George Bernard Shaw. A print from Hutchinsons Britain Beautiful, edited by Walter Hutchinson, volume I, 1924-1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur of Cliveden House in Buckinghamshire, captured between 1924 and 1926 by artist HN King. Nestled within an expansive 376-acre estate adorned with breathtaking formal gardens and parklands, Cliveden House is a true testament to architectural magnificence. Originally built in 1851 by Charles Barry for the Duke of Sutherland, this opulent residence became a National Trust property and luxury hotel. The historical significance of Cliveden House is undeniable, as it welcomed esteemed guests throughout its rich history. Even Queen Victoria herself frequented these halls until her amusement turned to disapproval when William Waldorf Astor, America's wealthiest citizen at the time, acquired the house in 1893. In an act of generosity towards his son and daughter-in-law in 1906, Astor gifted them Cliveden House. From that point forward, Cliveden became synonymous with lavish social gatherings attended by notable figures such as Charlie Chaplin, Winston Churchill, President Roosevelt, and George Bernard Shaw. The house served as a hub for vibrant conversations and unforgettable moments during the roaring twenties. This particular print originates from Hutchinsons Britain Beautiful edited by Walter Hutchinson in volume I from 1924-1926. It beautifully captures not only the exterior splendor but also highlights Sir Charles Barry's architectural prowess through vivid colors that bring this piece of British heritage to life once more.
