EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, created by the skilled hand of Johan Abraham Aleander in the late 18th century, depicts a Commandeur of the Ordre de l'Étoile Polaire (Order of the Polar Star). The Order, established in 1770 by King Gustav III of Sweden, was a chivalric order inspired by the French Ordre de l'Étoile du Sud (Order of the Southern Star). The Commander is shown in full regalia, dressed in the formal attire of the time. His costume consists of a long, grey coat with silver buttons, a white shirt, and black breeches. He wears a black hat adorned with a white feather, signifying his rank. The Commander is also seen wearing the Order's medal, which features a star and a polar bear, symbolizing the order's name and the northern location of Sweden. The intricate detailing of the print, achieved through the process of aquatint etching, adds to the grandeur of the image. This print serves as a window into the fashion and culture of the 18th century, providing a glimpse into the formal dress codes and chivalric traditions of the time.
