Committee-room, House of Commons, 1857. Creator: Unknown
Committee-room, House of Commons, 1857. Interior of the Palace of Westminster, London. It would be difficult to point to any edifice, ancient or modern, in which the style and character of the architecture are more completely carried out than in the new Houses of Parliament. Every apartment and means of communication throughout the vast edifice has its characteristics of the Tudor palatial style, which Sir Charles Barry has adopted...[Depicted] is one of the south end Committee-rooms in the river front of the Palace: it has a beautiful window, and a ceiling divided into compartments by deep mouldings, and somewhat Holbeinesque in character. The scene shows the form in which a Committee sits'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, hailing from the year 1857, transports us back to the Committee-room of the House of Commons in the Palace of Westminster, London. The creator of this photograph remains unknown, but the description in the "Illustrated London News" provides us with a rich and detailed account of the scene. The new Houses of Parliament, designed by Sir Charles Barry in the Tudor palatial style, are celebrated for their architectural integrity, with every room and communication channel embodying the distinctive features of the Gothic Revival. Depicted here is one of the south end Committee-rooms, situated along the river front of the Palace. The room boasts a stunning window and a ceiling divided into intricate compartments by deep mouldings, reminiscent of the works of Holbein. The scene captures the Committee in session, with men in formal attire engrossed in serious discussion. The room's atmosphere is one of quiet intensity, with the moulded ceiling and the warm light filtering in through the window adding to the sense of importance and meticulous attention to detail. The Committee-room stands as a testament to the grandeur and opulence of the Victorian era, with its Neo-Gothic architecture and ornate interior design. The Old Boys Network or Old Boys Club, a metaphor for the exclusive and influential network of Members of Parliament, comes to life in this image, as men from all walks of life gather to shape the political landscape of their time. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the inner workings of the House of Commons during the 19th century, a time of great change and transformation in British history.
