The Confederate cruiser Georgia, 1864. Creator: Unknown
The Confederate cruiser Georgia, 1864. Engraving from a drawing by Mr. Frank Wilson, of Birkenhead. '...the steamer Georgia, in the naval service of the Confederate States of America...formed the subject of a debate in the House of Commons on Friday, the 13th May, when Mr. Thomas Baring contended that the British ports ought to be shut against her, because she had been originally equipped and sent forth from a British port in violation of the laws of this neutral State...the Georgia, which was formerly called, the Japan..., was equipped by a Liverpool firm. Her crew was shipped by the same Liverpool firm for Shanghai, and sent round to Greenock by steamer...From the very first, however, the Georgia has been carrying on war against the United States, cruising in the Atlantic and burning a number of vessels. Her crew have now been paid off in Liverpool without any concealment, and the vessel is now laid up'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

**The Rebel Cruiser: Georgia's Notorious Voyage**
In this striking print from the mid-19th century, the Confederate cruiser Georgia is captured in all her glory. Originally built as a merchant vessel called Japan, she was transformed into a warship and commissioned by the Confederacy to wreak havoc on Union shipping lanes.
As seen here, the sleek and formidable ship boasts four masts and two funnels, with cannons at the ready to unleash devastating broadsides against unsuspecting American vessels. Her journey began in Liverpool, where her crew was recruited from Shanghai before being shipped back to Greenock by steamer.
The Georgia's exploits sparked heated debate in the British House of Commons, with some members calling for ports to be closed against her due to concerns over neutrality violations. Despite this controversy, she continued to ply the Atlantic waters, burning numerous Union ships and earning a reputation as one of the most feared Confederate warships during the American Civil War.
This print offers a glimpse into the tumultuous era when naval power played a significant role in shaping global events. The Georgia's story serves as a poignant reminder of humanity's capacity for conflict and innovation, even in times of great turmoil.
