EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the construction of the St Gotthard Tunnel beneath the majestic Alps in 1880. This remarkable engineering feat aimed to connect Italy and Switzerland by rail, revolutionizing transportation between these two countries. In this particular view from the Swiss end of the tunnel, we witness dedicated workmen diligently maneuvering wagons to remove debris. The sheer scale of their task becomes evident as they laboriously handle these heavy loads, showcasing their unwavering commitment to completing this monumental project. The image also provides glimpses into the world of 19th-century construction, with tools such as mathematical instruments and dividers scattered around. It serves as a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness required for civil engineering during that era. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, it is impossible not to marvel at both human determination and nature's grandeur. The rugged beauty of the Alps forms an awe-inspiring backdrop against which these men tirelessly worked day after day. Today, over a century later, this photograph stands as a tribute to those who contributed their blood, sweat, and tears towards creating vital connections across borders. It reminds us that progress often comes at great sacrifice but ultimately leads us towards greater unity and prosperity.
