EDITORS COMMENTS
The Corfu Pact: A Pivotal Moment in Balkan History - In the sun-drenched island of Corfu, Greece, in 1917, Prince Alexander of Serbia (later known as King Alexander I of Yugoslavia) and Doctor Ante Trumbic, a Croatian lawyer and politician, came together for a historic meeting. Representing the interests of their respective Serb, Croat, and Slovenian subjects within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, they signed the Corfu Pact, an agreement aimed at promoting unity and cooperation among the South Slavic peoples. This photograph, taken from "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" published by L'Illustration in Paris in 1924, captures a significant moment in the lead-up to the formation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The black-and-white image shows the two men in deep conversation, their expressions hinting at the gravity of the issues at hand. Prince Alexander, dressed in military uniform, exudes a regal air, while Doctor Trumbic, wearing a suit and hat, appears focused and determined. The Corfu Pact was a crucial step towards the eventual unification of the South Slavic peoples under one sovereign state. It marked a turning point in the complex political landscape of the Balkans during the First World War and paved the way for the creation of Yugoslavia in 1929. This evocative photograph serves as a reminder of the pivotal role played by these two men in shaping the modern history of the region.
