EDITORS COMMENTS
Countess Jean de la Greze, elegantly dressed in a flowing white dress adorned with feathers and a chic hat, stands before a grand fireplace with her pet dog at her feet in this striking 1918 photograph by Harris & Ewing. The Countess, born Eleanor Herndon Steele, was a prominent figure in early 20th century society. She was the daughter of Charles Steele, a prominent member of the prestigious J.P. Morgan & Co. However, the Countess's personal life was far from conventional. She married Count Jean de la Greze in 1910, but reportedly divorced him in the French courts in 1920. She went on to marry Dr. Louis Debonnesset and H. Hall Clovis, before settling down with her fourth husband, Emmet P. Reese, in 1941. The controversy surrounding the Countess's multiple divorces did not deter her from her fashionable appearance. In this photograph, she exudes confidence and sophistication, her dress made of fine fabric, the feathers adding a touch of glamour and opulence. The image is a testament to the Countess's bold and independent spirit, as well as the fashion trends of the era. This photograph, taken in the 1910s, is part of the extensive Harris & Ewing collection at the Library of Congress. The studio, founded by George H. Harris and Martha Kuntze, was a leading producer of photographic images in Washington D.C. during the early 20th century. This glass negative captures a moment in time, a glimpse into the life of a fascinating and controversial figure, and a reminder of the rich history of American fashion.
