Cressingham Manor-House, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Cressingham Manor-House, 1850. This house, which is situated about five miles from Swaffham, in Norfolk, is remarkable for the fact that its exterior is entirely coated with tracery formed in whitish terra cotta. It was probably constructed at the latter end of the fifteenth century, when the family of the Jepsons were the possessors of the place...[it is an] interesting example of the skill of our ancestors in the manufacture of moulded bricks...The whole edifice, no doubt, anciently was surmounted by a battlement and parapet; this has entirely disappeared, but I was shown a portion of a Tudor pinnacle dug up within these few years, which confirms the fact of its existence...There are traces of a moat, which formerly surrounded the whole edifice, but which is now quite dry...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Cressingham Manor-House, 1850: A Glimpse into the Past This photograph print, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, showcases the enchanting Cressingham Manor-House located approximately five miles from Swaffham in Norfolk, England. The house is distinguished by its unique exterior, entirely covered in tracery formed in white terra cotta, which adds an ethereal quality to its appearance. The manor-house is believed to have been constructed towards the end of the fifteenth century, during a time when the Jepsons were the proud owners of the estate. The intricate design of the building is a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of our ancestors in the manufacture of moulded bricks. Although the house once boasted a battlement and parapet, these features have since vanished. However, a fragment of a Tudor pinnacle, unearthed within recent years, serves as a reminder of the manor-house's rich history. The photograph also reveals traces of a moat that once encircled the entire edifice, adding to its grandeur. Although the moat is now dry, it remains an intriguing feature that speaks to the manor-house's medieval past. This photograph is an invaluable record of a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the architectural beauty and historical significance of Cressingham Manor-House. It is a poignant reminder of the skill and artistry of our ancestors, who created such remarkable structures that continue to captivate and inspire us today.
