The Crimean Troops Defiling at the Foot of the Column, Place Vendome, 1856. Creator: Unknown
The Crimean Troops Defiling at the Foot of the Column, Place Vendome, 1856. Wounded French soldiers in Paris. The soiled uniforms, but still more the haggard and worn appearance of the men's swarthy faces, told a tale of suffering and endurance which drew tears from many of the spectators; and the intensity and earnestness of the cheering exceeded anything ever before heard in Paris. The flag of one of the regiments...was torn to ribbons; the white maculated with the blood stains...and the eagle which surmounts the shaft showed, by one of its wings shot off, the fierceness of the struggle it had been engaged in. Behind the bands of each regiment marched the wounded...the shouting, clapping of hands, and waving of handkerchiefs which greeted them, brought a smile of proud satisfaction on their poor wan faces which it was impossible to see unmoved'. The Crimean Troops Defiling at the Foot of the Column, Place Vendome, 1856
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a powerful and poignant photograph that captures the triumphant return of wounded French soldiers to Paris after their victory in the Crimean War. The image, created by an unknown photographer, depicts the soldiers as they defile before the Column of July on Place Vendome, a grand monument honoring Napoleon Bonaparte and the French army. The soldiers' uniforms are soiled and tattered, their faces haggard and worn from the hardships of war. Their swarthy complexions tell a tale of suffering and endurance that draws tears from the spectators lining the streets. The flag of one of the regiments is torn to ribbons, its white surface maculated with the blood stains of battle. The eagle atop the column's shaft, a symbol of French military might, shows the fierceness of the struggle it had been engaged in, with one of its wings shot off. Behind each regiment marches the wounded, their shouts and clapping of hands, and waving of handkerchiefs, bringing a proud and satisfied smile to their wan faces. The intensity and earnestness of the Parisians' cheering exceeded anything ever heard in the city before. This image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1856, is a testament to the bravery and resilience of the soldiers and the pride of the Parisian people in their victory. The photograph captures a moment of triumph and jubilation, but also the cost of war and the sacrifices made by these brave men.
