Cross-roads, 1886. Artist: Joseph Swain
Cross-roads, 1886. The new Conservative Prime Minister, Lord Salisbury, pulls up at a crossroads. Two former Liberals, Lord Hartington, and, with the monocle, Joseph Chamberlain take the opportunity to climb down rather than proceed in the Conservative direction. This relates to the recent General Election which the Conservatives had won, partly through the disunity in the Liberal Party. If Gladstone could reunite his party, he would then have a majority in the House. Lord Hartington had refused to join the Conservative Cabinet, as had Joseph Chamberlain. From Punch, or the London Charivari, July 31, 1886

EDITORS COMMENTS
Cross-roads, 1886: A Political Turning Point". In this print by Joseph Swain, we are transported back to the year 1886 and witness a significant political moment in British history. The scene depicts the newly appointed Conservative Prime Minister, Lord Salisbury, arriving at a crossroads. However, what makes this image truly intriguing is the presence of two former Liberals who choose to disembark from their carriage rather than continue in the Conservative direction. The figures climbing down from the carriage are none other than Lord Hartington and Joseph Chamberlain. Their decision symbolizes the disunity within the Liberal Party that played a crucial role in enabling the Conservatives' recent victory in the General Election. If William Gladstone could reunite his party's factions, he would regain majority control in Parliament. Lord Hartington's refusal to join Lord Salisbury's Cabinet mirrors Chamberlain's stance as well. Both men demonstrate their commitment to their liberal principles by choosing not to align themselves with conservative policies. This thought-provoking cartoon published by Punch magazine on July 31st serves as both caricature and satire while shedding light on an important political event of its time. Through Swain's masterful engraving techniques and John Tenniel's artistic contribution, this black-and-white image captures not only a historical snapshot but also reflects upon themes of loyalty, unity, and individual convictions amidst changing times. As we delve into this fascinating piece of nineteenth-century artwork, we are reminded of how politics can shape destinies at every turn – even at a simple crossroads.
