Davys electric egg, 1883
Davys electric egg, 1883. Invented in 1809, it produced intense light from a voltaic arc between the points of two carbon rods. It was not until some years after Humphry Davys (1778-1829) death that the carbon arc lamp was widely used because the rods need frequent adjustment. Davy used boxwood carbon. From Les Nouvelles Conquetes de la Science by Louis Figuier. (Paris, 1883)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable invention known as Davy's Electric Egg, created by Humphry Davy in 1809. The image captures a pivotal moment in the history of lighting and electricity, as this ingenious device produced an intense light through a voltaic arc between two carbon rods. Although invented decades earlier, it took some time for the carbon arc lamp to gain widespread use due to the frequent adjustment required for its carbon rods. In this particular version, Davy utilized boxwood carbon, which contributed to the brilliance of his creation. The engraving featured in this print is from Les Nouvelles Conquetes de la Science by Louis Figuier (Paris, 1883), offering us a glimpse into the scientific advancements of that era. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of mystery and nostalgia to this piece of history. Davy's Electric Egg serves not only as a symbol of innovation but also as a metaphorical representation of bright ideas illuminating our world. This invention played a significant role in shaping electric lighting technology during the 19th century and beyond. As we admire this photograph, we are transported back to a time when science was pushing boundaries and revolutionizing our understanding of illumination. It reminds us how one brilliant mind can leave an indelible mark on society through their inventions.
