EDITORS COMMENTS
This ancient Greek image, dating from the 4th century, depicts the Deesis scene with St. Nicholas and an unknown saint. The Deesis, or intercession, is a common composition in Byzantine art, representing the Virgin Mary, St. John the Baptist, and other saints interceding on behalf of humanity before Christ. In this painting, the central figure is Christ Antiphonetes, or Christ the Intercessor, who is shown in three-quarter length, with his right hand raised in blessing and his left hand holding a scroll. To his right stands St. Mary the Virgin, dressed in a flowing robe and veil, with her hands folded in prayer. To his left is St. John the Baptist, identified by his distinctive camel's hair cloak and long, curly hair. Among the saints at the bottom of the image is St. Nicholas, the famous bishop of Myra, who is often associated with miracles and the giving of gifts. The exact identity of the unknown saint remains a mystery, but he is dressed in the robes of a bishop or high-ranking cleric. The painting is executed in rich colors and gold leaf, typical of the Byzantine tradition. This precious artwork is now housed in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden, and is a testament to the enduring legacy of ancient Greek and Byzantine art and religion.
