The defeat of the Spanish Armada, 1588 (c1857). Artist: J Rogers
The defeat of the Spanish Armada, 1588 (c1857). The Armada, a fleet of 130 ships under the command of the Duke of Medina Sidonia was intended to protect an invasion force commanded by the Duke of Parma as it crossed the English Channel. Harrassment from the smaller, more manoeuvrable vessels of the British Navy, the use of fireships and unfavourable weather conditions meant that the Armada could not achieve its objective of guaranteeing Parmas barges safe passage across the Channel. Ultimately the Armada was swept up the North Sea and much of it was destroyed in storms around the coasts of Scotland and Ireland. From Englands Battles by Sea and Land, volume IV, by Lieutenant Colonel William Freke Williams, published by the London Printing and Publishing Company, 1857

The Defeat of the Spanish Armada, 1588 (c1857) - A Historic Battle Unfolds
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a pivotal moment in history - the defeat of the mighty Spanish Armada in 1588. Painted by J Rogers and featuring contributions from Philip James de Loutherbourg and William Freke Williams, this artwork offers a glimpse into one of Britain's most significant naval victories. The image showcases the fierce battle between England's Royal Navy and Spain's formidable fleet. With 130 ships under the command of Duke Medina Sidonia, the Armada aimed to protect an invasion force crossing the English Channel led by Duke Parma. However, relentless harassment from smaller British vessels, strategic fireships, and unfavorable weather conditions thwarted their plans. As depicted in monochrome hues with intricate details, we witness warships engaged in intense combat on tumultuous waters. The bravery and skill of British sailors are evident as they navigate through treacherous conditions to defend their homeland against overwhelming odds. Ultimately, nature played its part as storms ravaged Scotland and Ireland coasts, leading to the destruction of much of the Armada. This historic victory marked a turning point for England during Queen Elizabeth I's reign and solidified its naval supremacy for centuries to come. Through this remarkable print, we are transported back to a time when courage clashed with power on vast seas. It serves as a testament to human resilience and reminds us that even against seemingly insurmountable challenges, determination can lead to triumphs that shape nations' destinies.
