The Denial of Peter, c. 1624-1628. Creator: Peter Wtewael (Dutch, 1596-1660)
The Denial of Peter, c. 1624-1628. Wtewael depicted the moment after the Last Supper when the apostle Peter (at the left) denied knowing Jesus in order to protect himself from Roman soldiers searching for Christs followers. Few works by this artist are known, and he draws on an unusual combination of styles. The dramatic use of light derives from Dutch followers of the Italian painter Caravaggio, in vogue around 1625, while the twisting bodies, startlingly low viewpoint, and tight detailing come from a more refined, courtly mode more popular earlier in the century

This print showcases "The Denial of Peter" a masterpiece created by the talented Dutch artist Peter Wtewael between 1624 and 1628. In this poignant depiction, Wtewael captures the aftermath of the Last Supper, focusing on the apostle Peter (positioned at the left) as he denies any knowledge of Jesus to protect himself from Roman soldiers who are fervently searching for Christ's followers. Wtewael's artistic style in this painting is truly unique, drawing inspiration from an intriguing blend of different influences. The dramatic play of light that illuminates his subjects can be attributed to the influence of Dutch artists who followed in Caravaggio's footsteps during that period. Meanwhile, Wtewael also incorporates elements reminiscent of a more refined and courtly mode prevalent earlier in the century - evident through his skillful rendering of twisting bodies, a strikingly low viewpoint, and meticulous attention to detail. "The Denial of Peter" stands as one among few known works by this remarkable artist whose talent remains underappreciated today. This particular piece exemplifies Wtewael's ability to seamlessly merge various styles into a harmonious composition that captivates viewers with its emotional depth and technical prowess. Displayed proudly within The Cleveland Museum of Art, this oil-on-wood painting serves as a testament to both Wtewael's artistic legacy and Dutch heritage art from the 17th century. Its significance lies not only in its historical context but also in
