Denis Papin, French physicist, 1870

Denis Papin, French physicist, 1870. In 1675, Papin (1647-1712) went to London where he worked with Robert Boyle and invented the forerunner to the pressure cooker, the steam digester, which was used to soften bones. He also made a working model of an atmospheric condensing steam engine which was later developed by both Thomas Newcomen and James Watt. Among the items at the bottom of the picture are his digester, left, and his steam engine, centre. From Vies des Savant Illustres by Louis Figuier. (Paris, 1870)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned French physicist, Denis Papin, in 1870. A true pioneer of his time, Papin's contributions to science and innovation are immeasurable. In 1675, he embarked on a journey to London where he collaborated with the esteemed Robert Boyle. It was during this collaboration that Papin invented the precursor to the pressure cooker - the steam digester - which revolutionized cooking techniques by softening bones. Not stopping there, Papin also constructed a functional model of an atmospheric condensing steam engine. This groundbreaking invention would later be developed further by both Thomas Newcomen and James Watt. At the bottom of this remarkable portrait lie two significant artifacts: his digester on the left and his steam engine at its center. The image itself exudes a sense of historical significance as it is taken from "Vies des Savant Illustres" (Lives of Illustrious Scientists) by Louis Figuier in Paris in 1870. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to this portrayal of Papin's brilliance and dedication to scientific exploration. Denis Papin remains an iconic figure within physics and engineering fields even today. His legacy continues to inspire countless scientists, inventors, and innovators worldwide as they strive for new frontiers in understanding our world through scientific discovery
