Departure of the Pilgrim Fathers from Delft Haven, July 1620
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a significant moment in history - the departure of the Pilgrim Fathers from Delft Haven in July 1620. Painted by T Bauer in the 19th century, this artwork beautifully depicts this pivotal event. The Pilgrim Fathers were members of the English Separatist Church sect of Puritans who fled religious persecution in their homeland. After finding refuge in the Netherlands, they made a daring decision to seek a new life in the New World. Setting sail from Delft on a small ship called Speedwell, they planned to rendezvous with another vessel named Mayflower for their transatlantic voyage. However, fate had other plans as it became clear that only Mayflower could withstand such an arduous journey. Thus, all the Pilgrims boarded Mayflower from Plymouth and embarked on their voyage to New England. In this image, we see men, women, and children gathered on board Speedwell at Delft Haven. Some are kneeling down in prayer while others stand tall with determination etched across their faces. The sense of anticipation is palpable as they prepare themselves for what lies ahead - an uncertain but hopeful future. This print not only commemorates an important historical event but also serves as a reminder of human resilience and courage when faced with adversity. It is a testament to those who sought freedom and opportunity beyond familiar shores – forever known as the brave Pilgrim Fathers.
