The Devil and Tom Walker, 1856. Creator: John Quidor (American, 1801-1881)

The Devil and Tom Walker, 1856. An eccentric and cantankerous man, John Quidor achieved fame in his lifetime for paintings of banners and fire engines, none of which survive. Today he is remembered for a series of fantastic, grotesque paintings based on the stories of Washington Irving (1783-1859)-a series whose exuberant style differs from the general run of American genre paintings, which tend to be more understated in mood and realistic in style. The Devil and Tom Walker belongs to this curious group of works. It portrays a scene from Irvings Tales of a Traveler (1824), in which Tom Walker, who was " not a man to be troubled with any fears, " encounters the Devil while on an evening outing

The Devil and Tom Walker, 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the artistic brilliance of John Quidor, an eccentric and cantankerous American painter. Known for his unique style, Quidor gained fame during his lifetime for creating paintings featuring banners and fire engines, although none of these works have survived. However, it is his series of fantastic and grotesque paintings based on the stories of Washington Irving that has solidified his place in art history. This particular artwork belongs to this intriguing collection by Quidor. Inspired by Irving's "Tales of a Traveler" the painting depicts a scene where Tom Walker, described as fearless and untroubled by any fears, unexpectedly encounters the Devil during an evening outing. The exuberant style employed by Quidor sets this piece apart from other American genre paintings of its time which tended to be more understated in mood and realistic in style. Created using oil on canvas technique, "The Devil and Tom Walker" showcases Quidor's mastery in capturing both fantastical elements and human emotions within a single frame. This remarkable piece can now be admired at The Cleveland Museum of Art. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has beautifully reproduced this iconic artwork through their print services. With great attention to detail, they have ensured that viewers can appreciate every brushstroke made by John Quidor over 150 years ago.
