Distributing Charitable Funds to the Herzegovinian Refugees at Ragusa...1876. Creator: Unknown
Distributing Charitable Funds to the Herzegovinian Refugees at Ragusa [Dubrovnik], from a sketch by our special artist, 1876. A general amnesty has been granted to all insurgents who within four weeks return to their homes; and the Turkish Government further promises to rebuild, at its own cost, all churches and houses which have been destroyed. Not much confidence is placed in these offers, and many thousands of refugees now in Dalmatia are disposed to starve rather than go back to be under the rule of the Turks. The Austrian Government has sent for the military commanders of its Croatian and Dalmatian Provinces to consult with them at Vienna as to the means of restoring order in Herzegovina, if needful, by an armed intervention. Servia appears to be in a very excited mood, and there is a strong party for war against the Turkish Government'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of compassion and relief as charitable funds are distributed to Herzegovinian refugees at Ragusa, now known as Dubrovnik, in 1876. Amidst the backdrop of political turmoil and uncertainty, the scene portrays a sense of hope and solidarity as the refugees receive aid from benevolent hands. The context of this poignant moment is outlined in the accompanying text from the "Illustrated London News." At the time, Herzegovina was experiencing the aftermath of an insurgency against Turkish rule. The Turkish Government had granted an amnesty to insurgents who returned home within four weeks and promised to rebuild destroyed churches and houses. However, the refugees, many of whom had sought shelter in Dalmatia, were skeptical of these promises and preferred to endure hardships rather than return to Turkish rule. The Austrian Government, concerned about the situation in Herzegovina, had summoned military commanders from its Croatian and Dalmatian Provinces to consult on potential military intervention. Servia, a neighboring country, was also in a state of excitement and there was a strong sentiment for war against the Turkish Government. The image, created from a sketch by an unknown artist, serves as a poignant reminder of the human spirit's resilience and the importance of compassion and aid during times of crisis. It also underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play during this period in European history.
