Dr. Atkinson in his Laboratory, 15 September 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Dr. Atkinson in his Laboratory, 15 September 1911, (1913). Surgeon and parasitologist Edward Atkinson (1881-1929) led the party which found the tent with the bodies of Scott, Bowers and Wilson. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Dr. Atkinson in his Laboratory, 15 September 1911" captures the essence of a remarkable era in Antarctic exploration. Taken by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting, this image immortalizes surgeon and parasitologist Dr. Edward Atkinson during the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913). Led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott, this expedition aimed to conduct scientific research while also striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. Driven by their passion for discovery and knowledge, the team consisted of experts from various fields including geology, zoology, engineering, meteorology, and physics. In this particular photograph, Dr. Atkinson can be seen engrossed in his work within the laboratory tent. His dedication to understanding Antarctica's unique ecosystem is evident as he meticulously examines samples collected during their arduous journey. Little did they know that their ultimate goal had already been achieved by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen just a month prior. Trapped by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey from the pole, Scott and his companions tragically perished at the end of March 1912. It was not until eight months later that their bodies were discovered along with poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle against nature's forces. This powerful image serves as a testament to both human resilience and scientific curiosity amidst harsh conditions. It reminds us of those who dedicated themselves to unraveling Earth's mysteries even at great personal cost - an enduring legacy etched into history through photographs like these.
