Dr. Rae - (from a daguerreotype by Beard), 1854. Creator: Unknown
Dr. Rae - (from a daguerreotype by Beard), 1854. Dr. [John] Rae, of the Hudson's Bay Company, has reached England, bringing with him from the Arctic Seas a number of articles that belonged to Sir John Franklin and his companions..."during my journey over the ice and snow this spring, with the view of completing the survey of the west shore of Boothia, I met with Esquimaux [Inuit] in Pelly Bay, from one of whom I learned that a party of "white men" (Kablounans) had perished from want of food some distance to the westward"...the bodies of some thirty persons were discovered on the continent, and five on an island near it...From the mutilated state of many of the corpses and the contents of the kettles, it is evident that our wretched countrymen had been driven to the last resource - cannibalism - as a means of prolonging existence'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Dr. John Rae, a prominent figure of the Hudson's Bay Company, has arrived in England after a perilous journey from the Arctic Seas. In his possession, he carries a collection of belongings that once belonged to Sir John Franklin and his companions. Dr. Rae's expedition in the spring of 1854 was aimed at completing the survey of the west shore of Boothia. During his journey, he encountered Inuit people in Pelly Bay, who shared devastating news. A party of 'white men' (Kablounans) had perished from starvation some distance to the westward. The grim discovery led Dr. Rae and his team to the shocking realization that the bodies of some thirty persons were found on the continent, and five on an island near it. The mutilated state of many corpses and the contents of the kettles left no room for doubt - our countrymen had been driven to the last resort - cannibalism - as a means of prolonging existence. This powerful image of Dr. Rae, captured in a daguerreotype by Beard in 1854, portrays the determined and resilient explorer as he returned from the Arctic with the harrowing news. Born in Scotland, Dr. Rae was a surgeon, physician, and surveyor, whose contributions to science and exploration were invaluable. The print, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the industrial era's grim realities and the unforgiving conditions of the Arctic.
